I came across a very interesting video about a week ago and can without a doubt say that it resonated with me. I had never heard of the concept “Multipotentialite” but, I definitely feel this idea was perfectly describing me!
So firstly, what is a Multipotentialite?
“A multipotentialite is a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life.
Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do.
Multipotentialites thrive on learning, exploring, and mastering new skills.” – Emilie Wapnick (PuttyLike)
The video spoke about how there is nothing wrong with people who identify with the above description. It touched on how, in many ways, society has created an expectation that as we grow up there is only one path we can choose in life. It described that people like this have certain strengths such as, adaptability, idea synthesis and rapid learning, which I have to agree with.
“Not having one true calling can be a wonderful thing. Having many interests, blending those interests and working at the intersections of different fields doesn’t make you indecisive or non-committal. It makes you original and innovative.” – Emilie Wapnick (PuttyLike)
I am 25 years old and still have no idea what I want to do with my life and still can’t imagine that there is only one path going forward. To give you an idea at the moment I am dabbling in photography, learning to write and navigate social media and have started my own Career Management Website. Before, I enjoyed learning about business, organisational structure, employee engagement and much more. I still enjoy all of these aspects but I find that my interest grows and fades as another interest comes to light. There seems to be a never-ending list of things I am keen to learn about and explore.
This concept has really changed the way I see my life and it may seem silly that a word could do so much, but it has. I don’t worry so much about what my ONE purpose in life is but rather I try focus on the multiple things I can explore. Now I find myself not wanting to be an HR specialist like I used to because I want to own multiple businesses in different spaces. Life is too short to only have one passion when there is just so much to discover out there!
The next big question now is are you a multipotentialite? Does the above sound like you?
If you think that you have just identified that you are, say hi below and welcome!
Then, head on over to Puttylike to learn more and join the community. I hope this helps you figure out your story:-)
Lastly, a big thank you to Emilie Wapnick! I think you may have changed many people’s lives by helping them sort through the confusion.
